HvA (university building)

24/7 Optimisation

Sustainability is an important priority for the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA). Together with VBoptimum, the organisation is exploring how energy use in an existing building can be structurally reduced. Using a Digital Twin and smart algorithms, the climate installation is continuously analysed and optimised.

Challenge
The building has an existing installation with boilers, chillers, air handling units and radiators. For HvA, the challenge is to make this building more sustainable and reduce energy consumption without compromising indoor comfort.

Solution
VBoptimum developed a Digital Twin of the building and its climate installation. This creates insight into how the building and installations behave in practice.
Based on predictions, algorithms control the installation 24/7. The goal is to reduce the energy required for heating and cooling while also providing insight into future sustainability investments.

Collaboration
The project is carried out in collaboration with Heijmans and the Housing department of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. By combining building knowledge, installation expertise and data analysis, an integrated approach to building optimisation is created.

Results
The project is now running live. The first energy savings are visible, but a longer measurement period is required before firm conclusions can be drawn about the total savings. In the meantime, the Digital Twin forms the foundation for further optimisation and future sustainability steps.
